Anju Bobby George, a former Olympian and Vice President of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), expressed her excitement regarding the recent achievements of Indian athletes. She noted that the number of national records shattered this season indicates significant progress in Indian athletics as they prepare for major international events.
Record-Breaking Performances
In a conversation with a news outlet, Anju highlighted that approximately 26 national records have been set this year across various events. The former long jumper is optimistic about India's prospects at the forthcoming Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, believing that the athletes are poised to secure a greater number of medals.
Anju also praised Ancy Sojan for breaking her long-standing national long jump record, calling Sojan's jump of 6.88 meters a remarkable achievement and a promising sign for the future of Indian athletics.
Anju's Reflections on Record-Breaking
"This year has been particularly impressive, with national records being established in multiple events. A total of 26 records have been broken, including my own, which stood for 22 years. I am hopeful that we will achieve more medals at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. I am thrilled that Ancy Sojan has surpassed my record with a world-class jump of 6.88 meters," Anju Bobby George remarked.
Rohit Yadav's Javelin Success
In another highlight, javelin thrower Rohit Yadav has made headlines by ranking second in the global standings for men's javelin throw, achieving an impressive throw of 87.05 meters during the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships held at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
The 25-year-old athlete secured gold with his final throw, establishing himself as the top Indian javelin thrower this season. His performance places him second globally, just behind Sri Lankan Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who leads with a throw of 92.62 meters.
Notably, two-time Olympic and world medallist Neeraj Chopra currently holds the fourth position in the global rankings with a throw of 85.69 meters. Rohit Yadav's previous best was 83.04 meters, and his latest throw also surpassed the meet record of 84.35 meters set by Manu DP in 2022.
