Anit Thapa Resigns from GTA Leadership Amid Corruption Allegations
Anit Thapa Steps Down from GTA
On Wednesday, Anit Thapa, the president of the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), announced his resignation from the position of Chief Executive of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA). This semi-autonomous body oversees the administration of the Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills in West Bengal.
Thapa, who has allied with the Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee, made his resignation public via social media. His announcement coincided with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's statement regarding an investigation into corruption allegations against the GTA, promising action against those found guilty.
In addition to stepping down as Chief Executive, Thapa also resigned from his membership in the GTA. Close associates of Thapa revealed that BGPM will now collaborate with the BJP-led government in the state for the development of the hilly regions.
Thapa formed the BGPM after parting ways with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM). With the support of the Trinamool Congress, his party contested all three assembly seats in the hilly areas—Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Kurseong—but faced defeat against the BJP.
Background of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration
The GTA was established in 2011 by the government under Mamata Banerjee to address the demands of the agitating Gorkha community, which seeks a separate state called 'Gorkhaland' from West Bengal. During a visit to Kurseong on Tuesday, Adhikari alleged that the previous government had allocated ₹180 crores for the GTA in the financial year 2024-25, but no work was done, and the funds were reportedly misappropriated.
He also highlighted alleged irregularities in the appointment of teachers in schools run by the GTA, stating, 'Those who steal public money will be sent to jail. We will spare no one. I will neither indulge in corruption nor allow others to do so.'
