Ancy Sojan's Victory at the Indian Athletics Series Final

Ancy Sojan from Kerala secured the women's long jump championship with an impressive jump of 6.76 meters during the Indian Athletics Series Final held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday. This achievement highlights her prowess in the event, even though it fell short of her national record. Shaili Singh from Uttar Pradesh took second place with a jump of 6.65 meters. Sojan previously set the national record with a leap of 6.88 meters in June 2026. Singh made several attempts close to her best, while competitors Bhavani Yadav, Mubassina Mohammed, Pariksha, and Abinaya Sri recorded distances ranging from 5.52 meters to 6.42 meters.

Aiming for Gold at the Asian Games

Sojan expressed that her recent victory has significantly boosted her confidence as she prepares for the Asian Games. She aspires to be in peak condition and secure a gold medal for India, with the dream of hearing the national anthem played on the podium. "I’m confident. This is my final preparation before heading to Japan, and I’m sure I’ll be in even better shape there. My goal is to win gold and experience that proud moment with tears in my eyes," Sojan shared with reporters.

Reflecting on Her Record-Breaking Journey

Sojan took a moment to reflect on the importance of breaking Anju Bobby George’s long-standing national record, dedicating her success to her father, who works as an auto-rickshaw driver. She recalled her dream of surpassing the seven-meter mark, attributing her achievement to years of hard work and commitment. "I am the girl who came from nothing. Many doubted my potential, but my father always encouraged me. I wanted to give him this national record as a gift. Since childhood, I promised myself to cross the seven-meter mark as soon as possible. This achievement has proven that I can push my limits, and I hope it inspires others as well," she added.

Record-Breaking Performance

In a remarkable performance at the National Inter-State Athletics Championships, Sojan leaped an astounding 6.88 meters, surpassing Anju's previous national record of 6.83 meters set during the 2004 Athens Olympics.
