Significant Meeting on Narcotics Control

New Delhi: Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, is set to preside over the 10th apex-level meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre this Friday. The primary agenda will focus on addressing the issues related to synthetic drugs, trafficking facilitated by the darknet, and enhancing the availability of rehabilitation services for drug users over the next three years.

This meeting will convene essential participants from 44 central ministries and departments, alongside 108 representatives from state governments and drug law enforcement agencies, in a hybrid format. The discussions aim to bolster the government's initiatives towards achieving a drug-free India.

During the meeting, Shah will unveil a vision document for narcotics control covering the years 2026 to 2029, which has been developed through extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including central government departments and drug enforcement agencies.

The document will outline a collaborative strategy to tackle the demand, supply, and harm reduction aspects of the drug crisis.

It proposes a network-centric enforcement strategy, delineating responsibilities, timelines, and measurable objectives for all involved parties, while integrating enforcement, demand reduction, rehabilitation, public awareness, capacity building, and inter-agency coordination.

This vision document is intended to serve as a foundational framework for policy development, execution, and institutional enhancement nationwide to combat drug-related issues, according to a government statement.

Additionally, Shah will present the NCB annual report for 2025 and inaugurate newly established NCB zonal offices in Jammu and Guwahati.

This meeting is anticipated to strengthen the government's 'Zero Tolerance Policy' against drug trafficking, a stance strongly advocated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The statement also noted that during the Drug Disposal Fortnight Campaign, around 209,500 kg of drugs valued at approximately Rs 6,000 crore are expected to be destroyed by various central and state law enforcement agencies across India.

The meeting will serve as a platform for a thorough review and evaluation of the collective efforts made by all stakeholders in the fight against drug-related issues in the country.

Emphasizing the necessity for a comprehensive government approach, the high-level meeting will discuss critical matters related to effectively combating drug trafficking and abuse over the next three years.
