Amit Shah Praises Gujarat's Historic Passage of Uniform Civil Code Bill
A Historic Step Towards Equality
Union Home Minister Amit Shah commended Gujarat for passing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026, describing it as a significant move towards ensuring equality for all citizens in India. On January 31, 2026, Shah reiterated the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) commitment to a uniform law for every citizen through a post on X. He emphasized that since the party's inception, the goal has been to establish a common legal framework for all citizens. Under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, BJP-led state governments have been consistently advancing in this direction. Shah expressed his satisfaction that Gujarat has achieved this historic milestone by passing the UCC Bill, following Uttarakhand's lead, thereby demonstrating its commitment to equality.
He congratulated Gujarat's Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and all the legislators who supported the bill. Shah stated, "I extend my congratulations to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and all the legislators who backed this bill. Governance should not be based on appeasement but on equal laws for all citizens—this is our priority and commitment." Earlier, Bhupendra Patel also congratulated all members of the state assembly and the citizens of Gujarat upon the bill's passage, calling it a historic moment for both the state and the nation in a tweet.
With the passage of this bill, Gujarat becomes the second Indian state to implement a uniform legal framework governing personal laws related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, irrespective of religion or community. Patel noted that the implementation of the UCC would establish a consistent legal structure for matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption for all religions and communities in the state.
He emphasized that this legislation guarantees equal rights for women across all religions and castes, enhancing their dignity and security. Patel remarked that it will ensure that women from all backgrounds receive equal rights, thereby strengthening their dignity and safety.
