Amit Shah Launches Modern Dairy Processing Plant in Ladakh to Boost Local Economy

Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has inaugurated a modern dairy processing plant in Kargil, Ladakh, aimed at enhancing the income of local dairy farmers and strengthening the regional economy. This initiative, part of the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' vision, includes advanced milk collection systems and solar energy operations. With significant funding and support from various government bodies, the project is set to modernize the dairy sector, ensuring transparency and efficiency. The impact is already visible, with a growing network of farmers and increased daily milk collection. This initiative is a crucial step towards achieving self-sufficiency in Ladakh's dairy industry.

Inauguration of Dairy Processing Facility

On Friday, Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation for a state-of-the-art dairy processing plant in Kargil, capable of processing 10,000 liters of milk daily. This initiative, part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for 'Atmanirbhar Bharat', aims to enhance the income of dairy producers in the remote areas of Ladakh and strengthen the regional economy.

Government Initiatives for Dairy Development

Officials indicated that these initiatives have been introduced under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. They include mobile milk testing laboratories, advanced milk cooling systems, and enhancements to dairy infrastructure, all aimed at promoting self-sufficiency in the union territory.

The modern dairy processing facility, with an investment of approximately ₹25 crore, is being established by the Indian Dairy Machinery Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).

Funding and Support for the Project

This project is being implemented under the National Dairy Development Program (NPDD) of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, which includes a grant of ₹12.74 crore, ₹10 crore in assistance from the National Dairy Development Foundation, and the remaining funds through the ALYUTDCF fund via the Himachal Pradesh administration.

The plant will operate on a 350-kilowatt solar energy system, ensuring clean and sustainable operations in this high-altitude region.

Modern Milk Collection Systems

To facilitate milk collection, modern mobile 'milk collection' and 'cooling systems' will be established, allowing direct collection from farmers, preserving quality, and strengthening the local economy.

Officials noted that these measures are part of a broader effort to modernize the dairy sector in Ladakh, increase farmers' incomes, and ensure transparency in the procurement system. Additionally, steps are being taken to address electricity-related challenges, streamline milk collection, and ensure timely digital payments to farmers.

The regular milk supply arrangement with the Indian Army has provided a stable market for dairy activities in the region, enhancing operational reliability.

Digital Innovations in Dairy Sector

As part of digital reforms, AI-based monitoring systems, mobile milk collection units, and climate-friendly cooling solutions have been implemented to maintain quality and transparency.

The impact of these initiatives is becoming evident, with the network expanding from 74 farmers in one village to approximately 1,700 farmers now. Daily milk collection has reached around 7,000 liters, with total payments to farmers exceeding ₹15 crore.

This solar-powered plant is set to directly benefit thousands of farmers, increasing their income and strengthening the local agricultural value chain.

Future Prospects and Value Addition

Officials mentioned that efforts are ongoing to deploy mobile laboratories, expand the cold chain network, and adopt an Automated Milk Collection System (AMCS) to enhance efficiency.

Moreover, value addition through products like cheese and yogurt is being promoted. Plans are in place to collaborate with brands such as Mother Dairy, Safal, and Dhara to provide quality dairy products to consumers.

This program is viewed as a comprehensive model for rural development, income stability, and improving living standards, contributing significantly towards 'Atmanirbhar Ladakh' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'.
