Amit Shah Launches Major Tree Plantation Initiative in Delhi

Delhi's Tree Plantation Campaign Kicks Off

New Delhi, July 7: On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will officially launch an ambitious initiative by the Delhi government aimed at planting 7 million trees. This initiative will be bolstered by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), which is organizing a "Mega Tree Plantation Drive" across 34 designated sites.

According to Vice Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal, the NDMC aims to plant approximately 600 trees and 50,000 shrubs as part of this special campaign. Preparations have already been made with over 50,000 planting pits ready for use.

The campaign will focus on planting native and environmentally friendly tree species such as Peepal, Neem, Jamun, Imli, Champa, Ashoka, Gulmohar, and Amaltas.

Additionally, various ornamental and native shrubs like Hamelia, Justicia, Canna, Lily, and Murraya will be introduced to enhance both biodiversity and the visual appeal of NDMC's green areas.

Chahal emphasized that the plantation initiative is not just a one-off event but a sustained movement involving the community. All NDMC Council Members, Heads of Departments, and staff will actively participate in tree planting across different locations within the Council's jurisdiction.

He noted that the NDMC has successfully conducted 31 consecutive Sunday plantation drives under the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam – On Sunday" campaign.

In addition to these weekly efforts, tree planting activities are regularly organized during national holidays, special events, and public gatherings, showcasing strong community involvement from Resident Welfare Associations, Market Traders Associations, schools, and local residents.

Chahal highlighted the NDMC's environmental contributions, stating that it currently manages 1,450 acres of green spaces, which include six prominent parks, 122 colony parks, 981 parks maintained by the CPWD, 52 school green areas, 51 roundabouts, 14 market gardens, and nearly 15,000 avenue trees.

Despite representing only about 3% of Delhi's total area, the NDMC accounts for nearly 55% of the city's green cover, establishing it as one of the greenest urban local bodies in India.
