Voting in Gujarat's Local Body Elections

Ahmedabad: On Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accompanied by his family, exercised his voting rights at Booth No. 38 located in the Naranpura area of Ahmedabad, as the local body elections unfolded across Gujarat.

Shah's voting coincided with a significant democratic event, where citizens participated in elections for municipal corporations, municipalities, district panchayats, and taluka panchayats.

In Ahmedabad, the municipal corporation polling witnessed enthusiastic voter turnout, with thousands of residents casting their votes.

Jay Shah, the Chairman of the ICC, also made his way to the polls to participate in the civic elections. Meanwhile, BJP MP Prabhu Vasava in Bardoli urged citizens to maximize voter participation, emphasizing the elections as a celebration of democracy.

He stated, “In our country’s festival of democracy, I encourage all voters in Gujarat to ensure 100% turnout today. It is our moral obligation as responsible citizens to vote and fulfill our duties…”

In Surat, Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil voted at Uttar Gujarat Vidyalaya in Bhatar, joined by his family, including his 89-year-old mother.

After voting, he remarked, “Today marks the local body elections in Gujarat. I voted with my family, and my mother, who is nearly 89, also participated. Voting is both a privilege and a responsibility…”

The elections are taking place across various urban and rural local bodies in Gujarat, encompassing municipal corporations, municipalities, district panchayats, and taluka panchayats.

Polling commenced early in the day at numerous booths, with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) set up at all locations and security measures implemented.

Similar to Ahmedabad, districts such as Surat, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Morbi, Botad, and Tapi are experiencing extensive polling.

The State Election Commission has highlighted this polling as a crucial democratic process at the grassroots level, with voting continuing until the evening and counting scheduled for April 28.
