Political Shift in Assam Assembly Elections

Guwahati, March 20: The political landscape of the Assam Assembly elections is evolving as Mankachar MLA Aminul Islam has officially joined the National People's Party (NPP) and will contest from the Mankachar constituency.

This announcement was made public when the NPP released its candidate list on Thursday, which included Aminul Islam along with Daniel Langthasa from Haflong (ST) and Ganseng B Sangma from Boko-Chaygaon (ST).

His transition follows his resignation from the All India United Democratic Front, indicating a shift in political alliances as the elections approach.

Prior to the candidate list's release, Aminul Islam explained that he had engaged in thorough discussions with constituents before making this decision.

“I had previously communicated through the media that any decision I make would be after consulting the residents of Mankachar. I held discussions with my supporters and the community, who emphasized that my political stance should reflect the needs of the people and the underprivileged,” he stated.

He further elaborated on the region's unique socio-economic context, noting, “A significant portion of Mankachar's population, around 60–70%, relies on Meghalaya for their livelihoods. Our access to the constituency is through Meghalaya, and our economic activities are tied to trade with the state. Addressing the challenges faced by our people necessitates active participation in regional politics.”

Aminul Islam also mentioned that he had conversations with Conrad Sangma and other leaders from Meghalaya, who assured him of their support in enhancing connectivity, unity, and development in Mankachar and surrounding areas.

“Given their positive feedback and the backing from my constituents, I am prepared to run on an NPP ticket,” he added confidently.

His recent departure from the AIUDF had led to speculation regarding his future political direction, with rumors suggesting potential alliances with other regional parties, including the Asom Gana Parishad.

As defections and realignments continue, Mankachar is anticipated to be a battleground in the forthcoming elections.
