Amaravati Set to Become Andhra Pradesh's Sole Capital with New Bill

The upcoming Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, set to be introduced in the Lok Sabha, aims to officially declare Amaravati as the state's sole capital. Following a unanimous resolution from the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has reiterated the commitment to develop Amaravati into a world-class city, emphasizing its role in the state's future. With plans for sustainable infrastructure and economic growth, Amaravati is poised to become a significant urban center by 2028. This legislative move marks a pivotal moment in the state's governance and development strategy.

Introduction of the Bill

The Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, 2026, is scheduled to be introduced in the Lok Sabha on April 1. This legislation aims to officially designate Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh. The bill seeks to amend the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act of 2014 to include the declaration that Amaravati will be the new capital. Following the formation of Telangana as a separate state, the original 2014 act stipulated that Hyderabad would serve as a joint capital for both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for a decade, after which it would become the capital of Telangana, necessitating the establishment of a new capital for Andhra Pradesh.

Legislative Support for Amaravati

On March 28, the Andhra Pradesh Assembly passed a resolution supporting Amaravati as the single capital, paving the way for the introduction of this bill. The resolution received unanimous approval and was forwarded to the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the Union Home Minister, and other officials. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, while presenting the resolution in the assembly, reaffirmed Amaravati as the state's only permanent capital, asserting that no force could change or relocate the capital.

Vision for Amaravati's Development

The Chief Minister emphasized the vision of developing Amaravati into a world-class blue-green city, integrating sustainable development with modern infrastructure. He assured that the capital would become a self-sustaining project and a catalyst for Andhra Pradesh's economic growth. Naidu expressed confidence that Amaravati would emerge as one of the most livable cities in India, predicting that a fully developed capital city would take shape by 2028. He stated that Amaravati is not merely a capital city; it represents the foundation for the future of Andhra Pradesh.
