Bail Granted to Vinay Kumar Tiwari

The Allahabad High Court has approved bail for Vinay Kumar Tiwari, the former station officer of the Chaubepur police station in Kanpur, who is implicated in the Bikru massacre case.

Tiwari faces allegations of informing gangster Vikas Dubey about a police raid, which led to an ambush on July 3, 2020, resulting in the deaths of eight police officers at the hands of Dubey and his gang.

Justice Siddharth, while granting bail to Tiwari, stated in his order on June 16, 'After hearing the arguments from both sides and considering the uncertainty regarding the trial's outcome, the petitioner should be released on bail.'

During the hearing, Tiwari's attorney mentioned that his client has been incarcerated since July 8, 2020.

The lawyer pointed out that the prosecution took over two and a half years to initiate the trial after filing the chargesheet on September 30, 2020.

He noted that 102 witnesses have already testified before the subordinate court, with cross-examinations conducted for approximately 13 individuals.

The defense argued that there is no credible evidence collected by the investigating officer to substantiate the claim that Tiwari informed Dubey about the police raid, and several co-accused have already been granted bail.

In opposition to the bail plea, the state government's lawyer contended that Tiwari and co-accused KK Sharma conspired with Dubey, leading to the tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of eight police personnel.

The prosecution's lawyer added that out of 102 witnesses, 14 have already testified, and the trial is expected to conclude soon. He also mentioned that the fifth bail application of co-accused KK Sharma was rejected by this court on May 12, 2025.

Among the police officers who lost their lives in the attack on the police team sent to arrest gangster Vikas Dubey on July 3, 2020, were Deputy Superintendent of Police Devendra Mishra and seven others. Following this incident, Dubey was killed in a police encounter.
