Alka Lamba Launches Nationwide Campaign Criticizing BJP for Delaying Women's Reservation Law Implementation

Alka Lamba, president of the All India Mahila Congress, has launched a nationwide campaign from Shimla, criticizing the BJP-led government for failing to implement the Women's Reservation Law. Despite the law's passage and presidential approval, Lamba accuses the government of misleading the public. She demands immediate enforcement of the law, which could reserve around 180 Lok Sabha seats for women. Lamba also highlights the need for OBC women's inclusion in the reservation framework. Her campaign includes a postcard initiative directed at Prime Minister Modi, aiming to mobilize ten lakh women across the country to demand their constitutional rights.

Alka Lamba's Campaign Against BJP's Inaction on Women's Reservation

On May 5, Alka Lamba, the president of the All India Mahila Congress, initiated a nationwide campaign from Shimla. During this launch, she criticized the BJP-led central government for its failure to implement the Women's Reservation Law despite the passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, 2023. In a press conference held in Shimla, Lamba accused the central government of deliberately misleading the nation by delaying the enforcement of the law.

Lamba emphasized that the Women's Reservation Law has already been passed, received presidential assent, and the notification has been issued. Yet, the BJP government has not taken steps to implement it. She questioned why the Prime Minister is misleading the country. Lamba pointed out that the BJP has historically opposed women's reservation and highlighted Congress's role in passing this law. She stated that if the BJP had genuine intentions, women would have received their rights back in 2014. The Nari Shakti Vandan Act was only introduced under pressure from the opposition, and Congress ensured its passage.

She demanded the immediate implementation of the law without linking it to the delimitation or census processes, asserting that there are 543 seats in the Lok Sabha. If the law were enacted today, approximately 180 seats should be reserved for women. Lamba questioned why the BJP is not providing women with their rightful representation. She also expressed concerns about including OBC women in the reservation framework, stating that their demand is clear: implement the law immediately and ensure reservation for OBC women. The BJP is neither willing to enforce the law nor include women from backward classes.

To advocate for these demands, Lamba announced a massive postcard campaign addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which will involve ten lakh women from across the country. She described this as merely the beginning of a people's movement. Additionally, she mentioned plans for signature campaigns and outreach programs in villages, assembly constituencies, and urban areas, stating that they will reach every panchayat, ward, and district. Women will raise their voices and demand their constitutional rights.
