Alka Lamba Found Guilty in Women's Reservation Protest Case
Court Ruling on Alka Lamba
On Monday, the Rouse Avenue Court convicted former legislator Alka Lamba in connection with the women's reservation protest that took place at Jantar Mantar in 2024. The charges against her included violating a prohibitory order and obstructing public servants in the performance of their duties. An FIR was filed against her at the Parliament Street police station in 2024. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ashwani Panwar announced the verdict, with sentencing discussions scheduled for June 5.
Details of the Case
On April 18, the court recorded Alka Lamba's statement and framed charges against her. Previously, the court had issued summons after taking cognizance of the charge sheet. On February 25, the Delhi High Court issued a notice to the Delhi Police regarding Lamba's petition to quash the FIR. The Rouse Avenue Court dismissed her revision petition against the charges on February 6.
Judicial Commentary
Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh, while rejecting the revision petition, stated that there was no evident illegality, distortion, or jurisdictional error in the disputed order. The court emphasized that the lower court had thoroughly examined witness statements and electronic evidence, concluding that a prima facie case existed. It also noted that the standard for framing charges is not beyond reasonable doubt but provides sufficient grounds for further proceedings.
