Indian pacer Akash Deep shared a humorous anecdote prior to his Test debut against England during the fourth match of the five-match series in Ranchi in 2024. He was included in the playing XI after the management opted to rest Jasprit Bumrah to manage his workload.
The Bengal bowler received his first international cap from then-head coach Rahul Dravid in a touching ceremony. Akash made a remarkable start to his Test career, taking down England's top order by dismissing Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, and Zak Crawley in a stunning opening spell.
He secured three wickets in the first innings, but could not add to his tally in the second as England was bowled out for 145, leading India to a five-wicket victory. In the final Test, Akash was replaced in the playing XI by Jasprit Bumrah, who returned after his rest.
A Comical Mix-Up Before His Debut
On the eve of his Test debut, Akash Deep experienced a funny moment of confusion when he received a message from head coach Rahul Dravid, which he initially overlooked. He later realized the significance of the message and quickly called back to apologize.
During an interview with a Media Channel, Akash explained that he had not saved Dravid's number, leading him to ignore the message about his debut. He said, "I received a message from Rahul sir stating, 'You are playing tomorrow.' Since his number wasn't saved, I missed it."
Feeling anxious about his selection, he checked the message again and recognized it was from Dravid. He promptly called to apologize for the oversight.
A Career-Defining Moment
Akash Deep was brought into India's squad for the remaining Tests against England as a replacement for Avesh Khan, following his impressive performances for India A against the England Lions.
Although he played just one Test in the series, Akash made a significant impact, finishing with three wickets in his debut match against England.
Upon receiving confirmation from Dravid about his debut, Akash viewed it as the culmination of 22-23 years of hard work. He remarked, "I was thrilled, but I saw it as a major opportunity. I considered this the biggest chance of my life."
In his Test career, Akash Deep has taken 28 wickets, including a four-wicket haul and a five-wicket match, with an average of 35.78 and an economy rate of 3.91 across 10 matches. His best performance came during India's tour of England, where he claimed 13 wickets at an average of 36.46.
Currently, Akash Deep has been named in the Rest of India's squad for the upcoming Irani Cup against Jammu and Kashmir, pending fitness, as he has been recovering from an injury.
