Aizawl Reports Significant Rise in HIV Cases: Key Insights from Recent Data

Aizawl district has reported a concerning increase in HIV cases, with 1,005 new infections identified during the 2025-26 period. The District AIDS Prevention and Control Committee has highlighted the need for enhanced strategies to combat this rise, particularly among high-risk groups. The meeting also introduced a condom finder app aimed at improving access to prevention methods. With a focus on education and outreach, the committee aims to strengthen efforts in identifying and supporting individuals living with HIV. Aizawl, June 30: During the 2025-26 period, Aizawl district identified 1,005 new HIV-positive individuals out of 36,634 general blood tests, resulting in a positivity rate of 2.74 percent, as reported by the District AIDS Prevention and Control Committee (DAPCC).

Among the 8,595 pregnant women screened, 52 tested positive for HIV, which is 0.60 percent of those examined.

The data indicates that the majority of new infections occurred in individuals aged 25 to 35, totaling 381 cases. Additionally, 14 children under 14 and 79 individuals over 50 were also diagnosed with the virus.

Heterosexual transmission was the predominant mode of infection, accounting for 762 cases (76.3%). This was followed by 160 cases (14.7%) linked to injecting drug use, 62 cases (6.4%) from homosexual or bisexual transmission, and 12 cases (1.5%) from parent-to-child transmission, with nine cases (0.8%) having an unspecified mode of transmission.

Currently, 10,715 individuals are undergoing Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) in the district, with 14 patients co-infected with tuberculosis (TB) and HIV.

Among high-risk populations, 39 HIV-positive cases were found from 3,613 tests among injecting drug users, 12 cases from 366 tests among female sex workers, and 13 cases from 7,333 tests among men who have sex with men (MSM).

This information was shared during a meeting of the District AIDS Prevention and Control Committee at the DC Conference Hall, chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner Vanlalrova.

The committee evaluated its activities for 2025-26 and strategized on measures to reduce the increasing HIV infection rates in Aizawl while enhancing efforts to identify all individuals living with HIV.

Additionally, the meeting included a demonstration of a condom finder app aimed at improving access to condoms. Members noted that the app has not yet been widely promoted and recommended enhancements to improve its functionality and user experience.
