AIUDF Unveils Third Candidate List for Assam Assembly Elections

The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has released its third list of candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, featuring six new nominees including former MLAs. This announcement brings the total number of declared candidates to 27 as the party aims to strengthen its position in key constituencies. The AIUDF is contesting independently after not joining the Congress-led opposition alliance. With a focus on minority-dominated areas, the party is strategically targeting regions where it has historically performed well. The ruling BJP currently holds a majority in the assembly, while the opposition includes the Congress and AIUDF. Vote counting is set for May 4.

AIUDF Expands Candidate List Ahead of Elections

Guwahati, March 20: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has announced its third batch of six candidates for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, further solidifying its lineup as the April 9 polls approach.

In this latest announcement, former MLAs Sheikh Shah Alam and Ali Akbar Miah will contest from the Jaleswar and Birsing-Jarua constituencies, respectively.

Other nominees include Abdul Salam Shah from Mankachar, Farhad Ali from Bhawanipur-Sorbhog, Minar Hussain Mazarbhuiya from Sonai, and Choudhury Hibbur Rasul Usama Mabrur from Karimganj North.

With this update, the AIUDF has now declared candidates for a total of 27 constituencies.

The party is running independently in these elections after not being included in the Congress-led opposition coalition.

Previously, the AIUDF had released two candidate lists, with party leader Badruddin Ajmal confirmed to contest from Binnakandi.

In its initial list, the party introduced nine candidates, primarily focusing on constituencies with significant minority populations in lower and central Assam, indicating a strategy to strengthen its traditional voter base.

The second list featured 12 candidates, including the official announcement of Badruddin Ajmal from Binnakandi, showcasing a blend of seasoned politicians and newcomers, reflecting the party's aim to combine continuity with fresh representation.

Throughout all three lists, the AIUDF has strategically chosen constituencies where it has historically excelled or has a strong organizational presence, particularly in districts like Dhubri, Barpeta, Karimganj, and Cachar.

In the current 126-member Assam Assembly, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holds 64 seats, while its allies — Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), and Bodoland People's Front (BPF) — have 9, 7, and 3 seats, respectively.

On the opposition front, the Indian National Congress has 26 MLAs, followed by the AIUDF with 15 and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) with one legislator. There is also one Independent MLA.

Vote counting is scheduled for May 4.
