AIUDF Proposes Badruddin Ajmal for Rajya Sabha Seat, Seeks Congress Support

The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has nominated its president, Badruddin Ajmal, for a Rajya Sabha seat from Assam and is actively seeking support from the Congress party. With the terms of three current Rajya Sabha members ending soon, AIUDF believes the opposition can secure one of the seats. The party has reached out to key Congress leaders, emphasizing the need for collaboration to win against the NDA. Ajmal's extensive parliamentary experience is highlighted as a significant asset for representing Assam's interests in the Rajya Sabha. The AIUDF hopes for a positive response from Congress, given the underrepresentation of Muslims in the state's Rajya Sabha seats.

AIUDF's Candidature Announcement

Guwahati, Jan 10: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has put forward its president Badruddin Ajmal as a candidate for an upcoming Rajya Sabha vacancy from Assam, requesting backing from the Congress party.

The terms of three Rajya Sabha members from Assam, including Bhubaneswar Kalita and Rameswar Teli from the BJP, along with Independent Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, are set to conclude on April 9.

The Election Commission is anticipated to announce the election schedule for these vacancies shortly.

During a press conference, AIUDF's general secretary (organization) and MLA Rafiqul Islam stated that the opposition holds enough strength to secure one of the three available seats.

He mentioned that the AIUDF has reached out to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, and other senior Congress figures, requesting their support for Ajmal in the Rajya Sabha elections.

Islam emphasized that the AIUDF has previously supported Congress and other opposition candidates in Rajya Sabha and presidential elections.

“This time, we hope for Congress's support. The NDA, given its current numbers in the Assam Legislative Assembly, is unlikely to win more than two of the three vacant seats in April. They lack the strength to secure the third seat, allowing the opposition to potentially win it collectively,” he stated.

Islam also highlighted Ajmal's extensive parliamentary experience, having served three terms as a Lok Sabha MP.

“He is well-equipped to address issues concerning Assam and the Northeast in the Rajya Sabha. Moreover, very few Muslims have been elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam, despite the community representing one-third of the state's population. We are hopeful for a favorable response from the Congress party,” he added.
