Guwahati, Mar 17: Air India and Air India Express have officially started their flight services from the newly opened Terminal 2 (T2) at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, significantly enhancing air travel connectivity in the Northeast region.
The inaugural flight for Air India at the new terminal was AI 879 from Delhi, which touched down on Tuesday morning. Following this, the return flight AI 880 to Delhi marked the first departure from T2.
To celebrate this milestone, Air India offered passengers on the inaugural flight a taste of local culture by serving traditional Assamese sweet narikolor laru, while the first passenger to check in was presented with a gamusa.
Air India Express also commenced its operations from T2, with flight IX 1517 from Kolkata being its first arrival. The subsequent flight to Imphal represented the airline's first departure from the new terminal.
Currently, Air India operates two daily round trips between Delhi and Guwahati, while Air India Express provides 17 daily flights connecting Guwahati to various cities, including Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dibrugarh, Dimapur, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jaipur, and Kolkata.
Officials have confirmed that ground teams from both airlines are stationed at the new terminal to facilitate smooth passenger services and operations.
The launch of T2 is anticipated to greatly improve regional connectivity and stimulate tourism and economic growth in Assam and the broader Northeast area.
This terminal, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 20, 2025, was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 4,000 crore and is designed to accommodate up to 13.1 million passengers each year.
In addition, the Assam government has initiated plans for a second terminal at Guwahati's primary airport.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma indicated prior to the T2 inauguration that the planning for a second terminal was already in progress.
With enhanced passenger amenities, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and increased operational capacity, the new terminal is expected to alleviate congestion at the current airport and enhance the overall travel experience.
