Air India Flight Encounters Turbulence, Injuring Passengers and Crew

Turbulence Incident on Air India Flight

New Delhi, August 5 - The Minister of Civil Aviation, K. Ram Mohan Naidu, reported on Wednesday that an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi experienced severe atmospheric turbulence for approximately four to five minutes on Tuesday. This incident resulted in injuries to several crew members, affecting their necks and spines. The sudden turbulence caused the aircraft to drop nearly 300 feet, leading to at least 17 injuries, including four crew members. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is currently investigating the matter.

During a press conference held in the national capital, Naidu stated that the turbulence lasted for about five minutes. He remarked, “The turbulence persisted for four to five minutes.” Following this, the aircraft had to continue flying for nearly another hour, during which the crew provided all possible assistance to the passengers. He praised their bravery, saying, “I want to thank them for their courage.”

When asked about the severity of the injuries, the minister noted that two crew members sustained injuries to their lower spine and neck. He mentioned that doctors have advised them to rest. The flight had 137 passengers and eight crew members on board. Following the incident on Tuesday, 13 passengers and four crew members were hospitalized for treatment.

Air India issued a statement confirming that all 13 passengers hospitalized after the incident on flight AI2379 from Phuket to Delhi were discharged by 3:30 PM on August 5. The statement added, “Four crew members are still under medical supervision and receiving treatment.” Air India also mentioned that their team is in contact with the affected individuals at the hospitals.
