Air India Reports Technical Issues with Boeing 787

New Delhi: Since July, Air India has encountered three technical issues concerning its Boeing 787 aircraft, as disclosed in Parliament on Thursday.

In response to a query in the Lok Sabha, Murlidhar Mohol, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, noted that following an incident involving a Boeing 787 in Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) mandated Air India to conduct thorough safety inspections on its Boeing 787 fleet. The airline confirmed that all aircraft were inspected and deemed satisfactory.

The DGCA is responsible for ensuring that airlines adhere to safety and maintenance protocols through various methods, including surveillance, spot checks, and night inspections. Any observations made during these checks are communicated to the airlines for necessary corrective measures.

In cases of non-compliance, the DGCA may take enforcement actions, which can include warnings, suspensions, cancellations, or financial penalties against the airlines or their staff, as explained by the minister.

Mohol emphasized that technical faults can occur during flight operations due to equipment malfunctions, necessitating prompt rectification by airlines to maintain safe and reliable air transport services. Flight crews report these issues upon receiving alerts in the cockpit or when facing operational difficulties.

These technical issues are documented in the aircraft's Flight Report Book and are reviewed by a qualified Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) after each flight, following the procedures outlined in the Manufacturer's Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM) or Troubleshooting Manual.

The necessary repairs are carried out according to the AMM, which may involve replacing components, testing, and servicing. Once the issues are resolved satisfactorily, the aircraft is cleared for service, and this is recorded in the Flight Report Book.
