AIFF President Commends Team's Efforts

Kalyan Chaubey, the President of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), expressed admiration for India's performance against Uruguay, particularly noting their strong start and determination. He pointed out that the rain interruption following India's equalizer may have hindered their momentum. Chaubey emphasized the importance of regular matches against high-caliber teams for the team's growth, stating that international friendlies are essential for assessing strengths and weaknesses before major tournaments. He remains optimistic about the team's potential.

Heavy Defeat Despite a Historic Goal

India faced a challenging 6-1 loss to Uruguay at Salt Lake Stadium on Tuesday. Anirudh Thapa's historic goal provided a brief moment of joy for the home crowd, but Uruguay quickly regained control and dominated the match.

"The team performed well, especially with the penalty goal. Some debated whether it was a penalty, claiming it was a clean tackle. However, the match was interrupted by rain right after the equalizer. Had the game not paused for those 20 minutes while India was gaining momentum, the outcome could have been different. Competing against players from top global clubs will only enhance their skills. International friendlies serve to test the team's capabilities for future competitions. I believe this team has great potential, and their confidence was evident on the field," Chaubey remarked after the match.

A Significant Moment for Indian Football

West Bengal Minister Indranil Khan referred to the match against Uruguay as a pivotal moment for Indian football, emphasizing the exposure gained from competing against elite teams like Brazil and Uruguay. He commended the Indian team's efforts despite missed chances and suggested that this experience could mark a significant milestone for Indian football. Khan also criticized the politicization of football in West Bengal, claiming that political interference and nepotism have negatively impacted the state's football scene over the past two decades.

"We witnessed a historic event; our national team faced top-tier football nations like Brazil and Uruguay. We believe the Indian team can compete at that level. For spectators and players alike, this was a tremendous experience—an invaluable opportunity and exposure, marking a major milestone for Indian football. The Indian team attempted to capitalize on several opportunities, though luck was not on their side today. Nonetheless, we saw excellent football, and it was a remarkable moment for us. The politics of the Trinamool Congress and the CPM have infiltrated Kolkata's football grounds over the last 10 to 20 years, causing significant damage to football in West Bengal, a state known for its football passion. Politics should remain out of certain areas, such as hospitals, educational institutions, and sports grounds, yet they have intruded, creating 'cut-money' syndicates and promoting political nepotism," Khan stated.

Thapa's Goal: A Bright Spot

Thapa's equalizer stands as a significant achievement in Indian football history, even amidst defeat. He became only the second Indian player to score against Uruguay in a senior international match, following Manas Bhattacharya, who netted a goal during India's 3-1 loss at the 1982 Nehru Cup in Eden Gardens.

India concluded this three-match series with a draw against Panama and losses to Brazil and Uruguay, scoring two goals while conceding 11 against teams that participated in the 2026 World Cup. Thapa's goal will be remembered as a highlight of the night, showcasing how swiftly a match at this level can turn against India.
