AIFF President Commends Team's Efforts

Kalyan Chaubey, the President of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), expressed his admiration for India's performance against Uruguay, particularly noting their strong start, confidence, and work ethic. He mentioned that the rain interruption following India's equalizer might have hindered their momentum and emphasized the importance of regular matches against high-caliber opponents for the team's growth. Chaubey highlighted that international friendlies are essential for pinpointing strengths and weaknesses in preparation for significant competitions, expressing optimism about the team's future potential.

Heavy Defeat Despite Historic Goal

India faced a challenging 6-1 defeat to Uruguay at Salt Lake Stadium on Tuesday. Anirudh Thapa brought a moment of joy for the home crowd with a historic goal, but Uruguay quickly regained control and dominated the match thereafter.

"The team performed admirably; the initial phase was particularly strong, especially with the penalty goal. Some questioned the penalty decision, claiming it was a clean tackle, but the match was interrupted by rain right after the equalizer. Had the game not been paused for those 20 minutes when the Indian team was gaining momentum, the outcome might have been different. Competing against players from top global clubs will only enhance their skills. The essence of international friendlies is to evaluate the team's capabilities for future competitions. I firmly believe this team has significant potential. Their hard work on the field and their confidence were commendable," Chaubey remarked after the match.

A Landmark Moment for Indian Football

West Bengal Minister Indranil Khan referred to the match against Uruguay as a pivotal moment for Indian football, emphasizing the valuable experience gained from competing against elite teams like Brazil and Uruguay. He commended the Indian team's efforts despite missed chances and suggested that this experience could serve as a crucial milestone for Indian football. Khan also criticized the politicization of football in West Bengal, alleging that political interference and nepotism have negatively impacted the state's football environment over the past two decades.

"We witnessed a historic event; our national team faced top-tier football nations like Brazil and Uruguay. We believe the Indian national team can genuinely compete at that level. For both spectators and players, this was an incredible experience—an immense opportunity for exposure, marking a significant milestone for Indian football. The Indian team attempted to convert several chances, but luck was not on their side today. Nonetheless, we saw excellent football, and it was a remarkable moment for us. The influence of politics—particularly from the Trinamool Congress and the CPM—has infiltrated the football grounds of Kolkata Maidan over the last 10 to 20 years, causing turmoil in West Bengal's football scene, which is a hub for football enthusiasts. Politics should remain out of certain domains, such as hospitals, educational institutions, and sports venues, yet they have intruded, establishing 'cut-money' syndicates and promoting political nepotism," Khan stated.

Thapa's Historic Goal Shines Amidst Defeat

Thapa's equalizer marked a significant moment in Indian football history, even in the face of defeat. He became only the second Indian player to score against Uruguay in a senior international match, following Manas Bhattacharya, who netted a goal during India's 3-1 loss at Eden Gardens in the 1982 Nehru Cup.

India concluded the three-match series with a draw against Panama and losses to Brazil and Uruguay, scoring twice and conceding 11 goals against teams that participated in the 2026 World Cup. Thapa's goal will remain a memorable highlight from the match, illustrating how swiftly a game at this level can shift away from India.
