AIFF Launches Investigation into Diamond Harbour FC's Financial Issues
AIFF to Investigate Financial Concerns at Diamond Harbour FC
Kalyan Chaubey, the President of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), announced on Sunday that an investigation will be conducted into allegations of financial and compliance irregularities concerning Diamond Harbour Football Club (DHFC). He emphasized the necessity for enhanced collaboration between the central and state governments to advance sports in West Bengal.
Chaubey made these remarks during a bicycle rally organized by the West Bengal Sports and Youth Affairs Department in partnership with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to celebrate World Bicycle Day in Kolkata.
Regarding the issues surrounding Diamond Harbour FC, which is owned by Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee and recently promoted to the Indian Super League (ISL), Chaubey noted that West Bengal's Sports Minister, Nisith Pramanik, had already raised concerns. "Minister Pramanik has pointed out that several compliance requirements were not fulfilled. This issue has been brought to our attention, and the relevant department will conduct an investigation and reach a conclusion," Chaubey stated.
Founded in 2022 and managed by Diamond Harbour Sports Pvt. Ltd., Diamond Harbour FC achieved promotion to the ISL after winning the Indian Football League. The club is currently facing scrutiny due to allegations regarding its financial and regulatory compliance.
Enhancing Cooperation Between Centre and State for Sports Development
During the cycling event, Chaubey also highlighted the significance of sports in youth development and welcomed the improved cooperation between the Central and West Bengal governments. "Historically, the West Bengal government has often acted in opposition to the Government of India. Over the last 15 years, not a single 'Khelo India' event was held here, which has been detrimental to athletes; no new stadiums were constructed, and no new competitions took place. The Prime Minister's promotion of 'Fit India' and 'Khelo India' is commendable, as it underscores the importance of sports for the mental and physical growth of youth. Initiatives like the National Education Policy and the National Sports Policy, which integrate sports into academics for the benefit of young people, are praiseworthy. Today, on World Bicycle Day, we are progressing towards a healthier Bengal," he remarked.
West Bengal Sports Minister Nisith Pramanik also took part in the rally, emphasizing that the event symbolizes a significant transformation in the state's sports environment. "For the last fifteen years, the sports scene in West Bengal was bleak. However, the people of Bengal sought change, and that change has arrived. We are now witnessing a collaborative effort between the Central and State governments; the Sports Authority of India and the West Bengal Sports Ministry have joined forces to promote this 'cyclothon' throughout the state. Today, thousands of young individuals are participating in this cycling event, advocating for a fit state. This sends a strong message to all of Bengal that the transformation we have experienced is not just about infrastructure or development; it signifies a fundamental shift in mindset, social perspective, and public perception, marking a radical change in the sports domain," Pramanik stated.
