AIFF Introduces National Football Philosophy

On Tuesday, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) initiated a nationwide consultation aimed at creating India's inaugural National Football Philosophy. This framework is designed to standardize the approach to playing, teaching, and developing football throughout the nation.

The goal of this initiative is to rectify persistent issues in talent scouting and player development, ensuring a seamless transition from grassroots levels to national teams, as highlighted in an AIFF press release. Once established, this philosophy will inform coach training, competition formats, and development programs across the country.

The AIFF emphasized the importance of grassroots involvement, encouraging input from coaches, players, clubs, academies, member associations, and fans. Participants are invited to express their opinions on six key areas: vision and identity, game model, player profile, development pathways, coaching strategies, and implementation. Interested individuals can contribute by completing a Google form available on the official AIFF website.

Addressing India's Football Challenges

The introduction of this framework comes as a response to India's recent struggles in football, both on and off the pitch. Over the past two years, India's performance has seen a decline, resulting in a drop to 136th place in the FIFA Men's Football Rankings. Aside from securing third place in the CAFA Nations Cup last year held in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, India has struggled to make a significant impact internationally.

In recent months, the Indian Super League (ISL), which features prominent national players like Sunil Chhetri and Sandesh Jhinghan alongside international talent, has faced challenges in attracting interest. Typically running from September to April, this year's ISL commenced on February 14 due to difficulties in securing bidders. After a prolonged period of uncertainty, the digital and television broadcasting rights for the league were awarded to FanCode. The league's operations were temporarily halted due to disputes between the AIFF and its partner, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), stemming from unresolved contractual issues.
