In a significant political shift in Tamil Nadu, S. Subaya, an AIADMK legislator from Ambasamudram, has resigned from his assembly seat. This follows the departure of three other AIADMK members supporting the TVK government, raising questions about the party's stability. Subaya emphasized that his decision was made for the welfare of his constituents and promised further clarification soon. The Speaker has requested a handwritten resignation to confirm its voluntary nature, amidst ongoing disputes regarding party discipline and pending disqualification petitions. This situation reflects the growing tensions within the AIADMK as it navigates internal challenges.

Political Shake-Up in Tamil Nadu Assembly

Following the resignation of three AIADMK legislators who supported the TVK government, S. Subaya, the MLA from Ambasamudram, also stepped down from his assembly position on Tuesday. Recognized as a key leader of the AIADMK in the southern districts, Subaya was part of a faction of 25 legislators opposing the party led by former minister C. V. Shanmugam. He stated that his decision was made with the welfare of the Ambasamudram constituency in mind and promised to provide a detailed explanation soon.

The Speaker requested Subaya to submit a handwritten resignation to confirm that he was voluntarily resigning from the party. Prior to meeting the Speaker, a group of AIADMK leaders, led by Agri S.S. Krishnamurthy, presented a memorandum on behalf of party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami. They expressed concerns over the acceptance of the resignations despite a pending petition regarding the disqualification of the three legislators for violating the party whip during the confidence vote on May 13.

Legislators from the Palaniswami faction argued that the Speaker should retract the notification declaring the assembly seats represented by the three resigning legislators as vacant, claiming that accepting their resignations was hasty and against the rules. Meanwhile, former Speaker M. Appavu posted on X, indicating that the petition seeking the disqualification of the 25 legislators elected under the party symbol due to anti-defection laws is still pending. He emphasized that there was no need for the Speaker to act swiftly on the resignation letters from the three legislators while the petition is under consideration.
