Protest Against Police Action

Dharamshala – The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in Himachal Pradesh has vehemently criticized what it describes as a “brutal lathi-charge” on its peaceful demonstrators during the Dhauladhar Assembly gherao in the Kangra district.
According to ABVP leaders, the police, allegedly following orders from the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu administration, used force against students who were peacefully advocating for their 11-point list of demands.
Context of the Demonstration
For several months, the ABVP has been conducting peaceful protests, sit-ins, and demonstrations throughout various districts, colleges, and universities in Himachal Pradesh. Their demands encompass:
- Enhancements to the education system
- Appointment of permanent faculty in colleges
- Reforms related to hostels and student councils
- Other vital measures for student welfare
The ABVP claims that despite numerous appeals, the state government has disregarded these issues, resulting in significant frustration among the student body.
Claims of Police Brutality
During the assembly protest, ABVP accused the police of employing excessive force, which included:
- Assaulting both male and female students with batons
- Dragging and kicking female protesters
- Using derogatory language towards demonstrators
The organization labeled the incident as “inhumane and disgraceful,” raising serious concerns regarding the safety of women in Himachal Pradesh.
ABVP's Position
The ABVP in Himachal Pradesh asserted that this incident reflects the government's frustration and incompetence, accusing it of taking a “dictatorial stance” rather than engaging in democratic dialogue.
“The government cannot stifle student activism. Until our 11 demands are addressed and those responsible are held accountable, ABVP will escalate its efforts,” the statement concluded.
