Abhishek Sharma Retains Top Spot in ICC T20I Rankings Amidst Rising Competition
ICC Rankings Update
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has released its latest player rankings, showcasing significant advancements for several Indian cricketers. Notably, Abhishek Sharma continues to hold the number one position among T20I batsmen. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma, who has been absent from the field for a considerable time, has made notable gains in the ODI rankings. However, Abhishek's lead is under threat as his close friend is rapidly closing in on him.
Tilak Varma Emerges as a Contender
Despite being away from international cricket for several months, Tilak Varma has made a remarkable leap in the ICC T20I rankings, now sitting in second place right behind Abhishek Sharma. Abhishek has accumulated 829 points, while Tilak trails closely with 804 points. If Tilak performs exceptionally well in the upcoming Asia Cup, he could potentially surpass Abhishek.
Upcoming Matches and Rankings
Both Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma are expected to feature in the Asia Cup soon. Travis Head, who opened the innings alongside Abhishek in the IPL, has suffered the most, dropping to fourth place in the T20I rankings due to poor performances against South Africa. Phil Salt from England currently holds the third position.
South African all-rounder Dewald Brevis, who scored a stunning century against Australia, has made a significant jump of 80 places to reach 21st in the rankings. Besides Abhishek and Tilak, Suryakumar Yadav has also secured a spot in the top ten.
Suryakumar Yadav's Status
Suryakumar Yadav, who has been sidelined since IPL 2025, is currently ranked sixth. His participation in the Asia Cup 2025 remains uncertain as he is recovering from an injury. Additionally, Yashasvi Jaiswal is positioned at 11th in the T20I rankings, although his place in the squad is not yet confirmed. In the ODI rankings, Rohit Sharma has overtaken Pakistan's Babar Azam to claim the second spot, with Shubman Gill leading.
