Abhishek Banerjee to Meet Lok Sabha Speaker Amid Party Division Dispute
Meeting Scheduled with Lok Sabha Speaker
On Friday evening, Abhishek Banerjee, a leader of the Trinamool Congress, is set to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. During this meeting, he will present his stance regarding the ongoing division within the party and express his opposition to the recognition of the splinter group. According to sources, this discussion is scheduled for 5 PM in the Speaker's chamber at Parliament. The meeting follows an invitation from the Speaker, who encouraged Banerjee to voice his concerns. This invitation comes ahead of a decision regarding the demands of 20 rebel MPs from the Trinamool Congress, who are seeking recognition as a separate faction following reports of their merger with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India.
Concerns Over Recognition of Splinter Group
On June 10, Banerjee sent a letter to the Speaker requesting that no recognition, status, or privileges be granted to any group claiming to be a separate faction of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). He argued that the Constitution and anti-defection laws do not permit the formation of separate factions within an existing political party. Additionally, he requested that the AITC's perspective be considered before any decisions are made.
Speaker's Approach to the Situation
The rebel MPs have previously met with the Speaker, but Birla has stated that he will listen to both sides before making any decisions. Parliamentary sources have indicated that the Speaker will base his decision on legal considerations and the rules of the House.
