Kolkata, June 15: On Monday, Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and a Lok Sabha member, arrived at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office to undergo questioning regarding the significant cash-for-school-job scandal in West Bengal.

He was instructed by the central agency's officials to report for interrogation by noon, but Abhishek, who is also the nephew of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, arrived at the ED's Salt Lake office shortly before 11 a.m., well ahead of the appointed time.

Upon his arrival, he chose not to respond to any questions posed by the media present outside.

Interestingly, there was no additional security presence at the CGO complex, nor was there any special deployment of police or Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) during his visit.

In the past, when the Trinamool Congress was led by Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek had also appeared at the ED's office for questioning in various cases, which typically involved extensive security measures both inside and outside the CGO complex. Traffic was often restricted in the area, and media access was limited.

However, on this occasion, the atmosphere at the CGO complex was quite ordinary when he arrived for his interrogation.

Notably, Abhishek Banerjee's name appeared in the charge sheet submitted by the CBI, which is conducting a separate investigation into the school job case, although he was not listed as an accused. His name was also included in the charge sheet filed by the ED regarding the same investigation.

The ED's charge sheet mentioned Leaps & Bounds Private Limited, where Abhishek previously served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

The CBI's investigation into the Bengal school-job scandal was initially ordered by former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who is now a member of the Lok Sabha representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the Tamluk constituency in East Midnapore district.

Subsequently, the ED initiated its own inquiry by registering Enforcement Case Information Reports.
