Legal Battle Over Medical Treatment

Abhishek Banerjee, a leader of the Trinamool Congress and Member of Parliament, has taken his fight to the Supreme Court, contesting the Calcutta High Court's ruling that denied him permission to seek medical treatment abroad for his eye condition. The High Court had dismissed Banerjee's petition on Wednesday, which sought approval for overseas medical care.

The court noted that the MP from Diamond Harbour was unwilling to appear before the medical board at the government-run SSKM (Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial) Hospital for a health assessment the following day.

In its ruling, the High Court stated, "The petitioner (Banerjee) has indicated that he will not present himself before the medical board at the Kolkata SSKM Hospital, and therefore, the court believes there is no need to prolong the matter raised in this petition any further." The court emphasized that had Banerjee attended the medical board, the specialists could have evaluated whether he required treatment abroad. On August 3, the Supreme Court instructed the Calcutta High Court to hear Banerjee's petition within a week.
