Abhijit Majumdar Resigns from TMC, Critiques Party's Shift Towards Communalism

Abhijit Majumdar has resigned from his position as president of the Assam Trinamool Congress, citing the party's shift towards communalism and a loss of vision. He expressed concerns about TMC's focus on appealing to the Muslim vote bank rather than representing all communities. His resignation follows the recent departure of another TMC leader, raising questions about the party's stability in Assam after its electoral defeat. Majumdar's comments highlight significant internal challenges within the TMC as it navigates its identity and strategy moving forward.

Abhijit Majumdar's Resignation from TMC

Abhijit Majumdar, who recently stepped down as the president of the Assam Trinamool Congress (TMC), has accused the party of losing its vision and transforming into a communal organization. He expressed that the party is now more focused on attracting the Muslim vote bank rather than representing all communities. Majumdar submitted his resignation to TMC leader Mamata Banerjee, stating that he has been associated with the party for over two decades and was one of its founding members in Assam.

Concerns Over Party Direction

Majumdar remarked, "I have been with TMC in Assam for more than twenty years, helping to advance the party. However, I must say that it has lost its vision. What I see now is a communal organization that prioritizes appealing to the Muslim vote bank over standing for all communities." He referenced the case of Sherman Ali, who joined TMC shortly before elections after being expelled from several parties and won from a Muslim-majority constituency.

Critique of TMC's Focus

He further criticized TMC for branding itself as a national party while being centered around Bengal under Mamata Banerjee's leadership. He pointed out irregularities in the party's processes and claimed that Assam has been sidelined. As a Hindu Bengali leader, he has tirelessly worked to protect his community and give them a voice, but he feels that the party's decisions are now against their interests. "My conscience tells me that it is time to leave the party," he stated.

Allegations of Communalism

Majumdar also alleged that TMC has become communal, failing to protect Hindus and betraying the ideals on which it was founded. He emphasized, "I have resigned from the party. There is no question of expulsion as it requires prior notice... TMC had no presence in Assam. I established the party here from the very beginning."

Context of Resignation

This resignation follows the recent departure of TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar from her position as president of the All India Trinamool Women’s Congress. However, Dastidar clarified that despite resigning from her organizational responsibilities, she intends to remain a regular party worker. The TMC faced a significant defeat in the recent Bengal assembly elections, resulting in the BJP forming its first government in the state.
