AASU Urges PM Modi to Address Foreign Infiltration in Assam
AASU's Appeal to the Prime Minister
Guwahati, Dec 25: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for honoring the martyrs at the memorial park dedicated to those who lost their lives during the Assam Agitation. However, the organization has also called on the Prime Minister to adopt a stringent approach towards identifying and deporting foreign nationals and extremist elements from Assam.
In a conversation with a local media outlet, AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya noted that Modi is the first Prime Minister to pay homage to the martyrs of the Assam Agitation. He emphasized the need for a dedicated operation to remove foreign nationals from the state.
During the Assam Agitation, AASU had proclaimed, “save Assam today to save India tomorrow,” a statement that resonates now as extremist groups have infiltrated India, posing a significant security risk.
Bhattacharya expressed optimism that the Central Government would take these concerns seriously and address the issue of foreign infiltration.
He pointed out that while the Home Ministry oversees the implementation of the Assam Accord, it is crucial for the Prime Minister to ensure that the infiltration problem is resolved for the sake of national security.
Regarding the current situation in Bangladesh, Bhattacharya urged the Indian Government to take necessary measures to secure the international border.
He suggested that a shoot-at-sight order should be enforced along the international border to deter anti-India elements from entering the country. “If such orders can be issued along the Pakistan border, there is no justification for not doing the same at the India-Bangladesh border,” he remarked.
Additionally, Bhattacharya highlighted that some leaders are now advocating for the inclusion of the Northeast in Bangladesh. He clarified that this demand is not new, recalling that during the partition, leaders from the former East Pakistan attempted similar claims, which were successfully countered by figures like Gopinath Bordoloi, Bhimbar Deuri, and Bishnuram Medhi.
