AASU Responds to Arrest of Senior Leader Amid Allegations

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has responded to the arrest of its assistant general secretary, Samarjyoti Gohain, emphasizing its commitment to non-violence and democratic principles. The organization expressed surprise at the arrest, linked to alleged fund transfers involving ULFA-I, and reaffirmed its faith in the legal system. AASU leaders clarified that they do not support any armed groups and will continue to advocate for peaceful methods. The union plans to conduct an internal review regarding the incident, ensuring that violence has no place within its ranks. This statement aims to reassure the public of AASU's dedication to the country's interests.

Guwahati, May 26: In light of the recent arrest of one of its senior officials in Tinsukia, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has issued a firm statement emphasizing its longstanding commitment to non-violence and democratic principles. The arrest of assistant general secretary Samarjyoti Gohain, linked to alleged fund transfers associated with ULFA-I, was described by the organization as ‘unexpected’.

The student union expressed its confidence in the legal system, stating that Gohain has already sought legal assistance and that justice will prevail. AASU leaders, including president Utpal Sharma and general secretary Samiran Phukan, reiterated that the organization does not endorse the goals or tactics of ULFA or any militant group.

“Our organization has consistently advocated for peaceful and democratic methods, and we will persist in this approach,” they affirmed, stressing that AASU has never promoted violence or anti-democratic actions and will continue to uphold these values.

Furthermore, AASU declared its intention to thoroughly investigate the matter internally before deciding on any further actions. Chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya emphasized that violence has no place within the organization, reaffirming the commitment of all members to non-violent practices.
