Guwahati/Nalbari, May 22: In response to the escalating costs of fuel and essential goods, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) organized protests throughout Assam on Friday, urging the government to take immediate action to address inflation and alleviate the burden on citizens.

Numerous demonstrators gathered in Guwahati, brandishing placards and chanting slogans directed at both the State and Central administrations. The protest commenced at Swahid Nyas and made its way to Latasil Field.

During the protest, AASU president Utpal Sarma expressed his discontent with the government's handling of rising prices, questioning their financial priorities.

“During the elections in Assam and West Bengal, the government spent lavishly on vehicles and large-scale events. Why didn’t they consider saving funds then? After witnessing the oath-taking ceremonies in both states, can anyone truly believe there is an economic crisis? The government cannot evade accountability by merely advising citizens to cut back on spending,” he stated.

Sarma cautioned that protests would persist if the government did not take steps to stabilize fuel and essential commodity prices.

AASU general secretary Samiran Phukan criticized both the State and Central governments for their inability to manage rising costs.

“Prices for essential goods have surged, and both levels of government have proven ineffective in controlling inflation. This protest is a direct response to their failure and a demand for price regulation,” he remarked.

Similar demonstrations were reported in Nalbari, where hundreds of students marched through the town chanting slogans like “Stop Price Rise” and “Axom Sarkar Hai Hai.”

AASU’s Nalbari unit vice-president Bhabajit Bezbaruah claimed that the ongoing price hikes have severely impacted ordinary citizens.

“The costs of all essential items have soared, yet the government remains inactive. We urge Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take swift action to rectify the situation, or our protests will escalate,” he warned.

These protests reflect the growing public anxiety regarding rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of living across the State.
