AASU Critiques CJP's School Initiative in Assam

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has raised concerns about the Cockroach Janata Party's (CJP) recent school initiative in Assam, alleging that it is politically motivated. AASU's general secretary, Samiran Phukan, emphasized the need for developmental activities to be free from political agendas, especially in light of ongoing issues in the region. The CJP's campaign, which aims to assess government school infrastructure, has sparked debate about its true intentions. Following a recent detention of CJP members by police, tensions have escalated. This article delves into the implications of these developments for Assam's political landscape.

Guwahati, Oct 4: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has expressed skepticism regarding the Cockroach Janata Party's (CJP) recent endeavors in Assam, claiming that their activities, particularly visits to government schools, are driven by a political motive intended to create unrest.

AASU's general secretary, Samiran Phukan, voiced these concerns on Sunday, shortly after CJP initiated its “School Thik Karo” campaign aimed at evaluating the infrastructure and facilities of government schools in the state.

Phukan remarked, “The situation is becoming unstable with actions like school visits. Given the current issues with outsiders allegedly using jihadi networks to propagate drug problems in Assam, it raises significant concerns about whether there are attempts to disrupt regional peace.”

He emphasized that while developmental initiatives are welcome, they should be devoid of any political motives. “If their focus was solely on Assam's development, it would be a different scenario. However, it appears to be purely political. We welcome those who wish to contribute to development without a political agenda,” he stated.

Phukan further noted that the public is aware of the political undertones of CJP's actions, asserting that AASU will persist in its efforts for the welfare of Assam's residents. “The community recognizes the political nature of their actions. The All Assam Students’ Union has consistently worked for the people of Assam and will continue to do so. We encourage everyone to discern the forces aiming to keep Assam in turmoil,” he added.

CJP's “School Thik Karo” initiative involves visits to government schools to evaluate their conditions and challenges faced by students and educators. Recently, a CJP team, led by co-convener Ashutosh Ranka, visited schools in the Palashbari and Dispur constituencies.

The organization has announced plans to extend its school visits throughout Assam and the Northeast. This campaign follows a regional volunteers’ meeting in Guwahati on September 27, during which several CJP members were detained by Assam Police prior to the event.

Approximately 35 CJP members, including Ranka and other senior officials, were taken into custody and brought to the 10th Assam Police Battalion campus at Kahilipara. They subsequently initiated a hunger strike in protest against their detention and were released later that evening. Police stated that CJP lacked the necessary permission to conduct the meeting near the state secretariat.
