Aaron Finch Critiques Cameron Green's Role in IPL 2026
Concerns Over Green's Performance and Auction Price
Aaron Finch, the former captain of Australia, has expressed his worries regarding Cameron Green's performance in the ongoing IPL 2026 season with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He believes that team selections should not be swayed by a player's auction price, labeling such a mindset as misguided. Finch emphasized that players should be chosen based on their suitability for specific roles and the conditions of the game, rather than their cost.
Finch pointed out that batting at No. 6 is an unusual position for Green, who has primarily played in the top order throughout his career. In a recent match against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Green batted at No. 6 and was dismissed for a golden duck by Noor Ahmed. Out of 68 T20 innings, Green has only batted at this position nine times, with the last occurrence being in 2024. Notably, he was acquired for Rs 25.20 crore during the auction.
"Facing two spinners, Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad, he lasted just one ball. This scenario is particularly challenging for him, especially in a run chase," Finch remarked.
"Selecting a team based on price tags is a foolish approach. The auction reflects the demand for specific skills, not a mandate to play someone simply because of their cost. Green is currently out of position, and his best performances have been at the top of the order," Finch stated, as reported by a sports media outlet.
Tim Seifert as a Viable Alternative
Finch suggested that Tim Seifert could be a strong alternative, highlighting his skills as a specialist opener, recent form, and diverse range of attacking shots. He noted that Green's limited participation in recent T20 matches due to injuries should prompt selectors to prioritize team balance and current performance.
"Cameron Green batting at No. 6 is quite unusual for him, as he hasn't frequently played in that position in T20 cricket. Seifert is available and is a specialist opener. Green's recent T20 experience has been limited due to injuries," Finch explained.
"Seifert brings a solid skill set and impressive form, especially after a successful T20 World Cup. He possesses various shot options, including scoops and ramps," Finch added.
KKR's Struggles in IPL 2026
So far, Green's performance has been underwhelming, with only 56 runs and a single wicket across five matches in the IPL.
Currently, KKR is at the bottom of the points table, still searching for their first victory in IPL 2026. They will aim to improve their situation when they face the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on April 17. KKR has had a challenging start, suffering four consecutive losses and one match that ended without a result. This marks the first time in the franchise's history that they have failed to win any of their first five matches, and they are eager to secure their first two points of the season.
