AAP Takes Major Action Against Raghav Chadha Amid Growing Tensions

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has made a significant move against its MP Raghav Chadha, who is known for raising public interest issues in Parliament. There have been indications of increasing rifts between Chadha and the party, and a recent letter to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat has stirred political discussions. The AAP has requested the removal of Chadha from his position as the Deputy Leader in the Upper House and has also asked that he not be allotted speaking time on behalf of the party. Furthermore, the party has proposed Ashok Mittal as the new Deputy Leader and urged the Secretariat to formalize this appointment promptly.

Currently, AAP has ten members in the Rajya Sabha, with seven from Punjab and three from Delhi. Raghav Chadha's political journey has been rapid and impactful. He began his career in 2012, collaborating with Arvind Kejriwal on the Delhi Lokpal Bill. Following this, he quickly became one of the prominent faces of the party. After AAP's victory in the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, he was appointed as the national spokesperson and later became the youngest treasurer of the party.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Chadha contested from South Delhi but faced defeat. However, he bounced back in the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, winning from the Rajendra Nagar constituency. Subsequently, he was appointed as the Vice Chairman of the Delhi Jal Board. In 2022, at just 33 years old, he became the youngest member of the Rajya Sabha and played an active role in the party's parliamentary and organizational activities, collaborating with senior leaders like Manish Sisodia and Bhagwant Mann. In 2023, he was appointed as the party leader in the Rajya Sabha, succeeding Sanjay Singh.

Raghav Chadha is recognized for raising critical issues in Parliament. Recently, he expressed serious concerns regarding the practices surrounding sarpanch husbands or panchayat husbands, highlighting that women elected to reserved seats often remain mere figureheads while male relatives make the real decisions. He urged the government to ensure women's rights to operate independently, fulfilling the constitutional amendment's intent.

Additionally, he has prominently raised the issue of menstrual hygiene in Parliament, describing it as a significant health, education, and equality concern affecting millions of women and girls in the country. He criticized the societal stigma and misconceptions surrounding this topic, which leads to girls missing school due to a lack of sanitary products, water, and privacy. Earlier this year, he took a unique initiative by working as a delivery partner for a day to understand the challenges faced by gig workers, showcasing his sensitivity and grassroots connection.

The proposal to remove such an active and well-known leader from his position raises several questions. Political analysts suggest that this decision may be part of a new strategy to strengthen the party's internal balance and leadership structure. Others view it as a sign of internal discord. It is believed that Chadha's relationship with party chief Arvind Kejriwal has soured, leading to his absence from party meetings and events, as well as his lack of engagement in party matters.

In the coming days, it will be interesting to see how the Rajya Sabha Secretariat responds to this proposal and how AAP reshapes its role in Parliament through this change. It is clear that the party is moving forward with adjustments in its organizational and parliamentary leadership to establish new dynamics.
