AAP Seeks Removal of Raghav Chadha as Deputy Leader in Rajya Sabha

The Aam Aadmi Party has taken a significant step by requesting the removal of Raghav Chadha from his role as Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha, proposing Ashok Mittal as his successor. This decision comes in the wake of Chadha's distancing from party agendas following the recent Delhi elections. His focus on public issues like parental leave and gig worker rights has raised eyebrows, leading to speculation about his future with the party. While the official reasons for this move remain unclear, it is believed to be linked to allegations of indiscipline. Chadha's recent advocacy for parental leave highlights his commitment to shared responsibilities in caregiving.

AAP's Request to Rajya Sabha Secretariat

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has formally requested the Rajya Sabha Secretariat to remove Raghav Chadha from his position as the Deputy Leader of the Upper House. In its place, the party has proposed Ashok Mittal as the new Deputy Leader. AAP has sent an official letter regarding this matter to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat.

Chadha's Shift in Focus

In recent times, following AAP's defeat in the Delhi elections of 2025, Chadha has distanced himself from the party's agenda and leadership. He has been concentrating on public interest issues such as paid parental leave and the rising costs of food at airports. Additionally, he has raised concerns about the rights of gig workers and the deteriorating traffic conditions in major Indian cities. His silence on key party issues has sparked rumors about his potential departure, especially after his name was removed from the list of key campaigners for Assam.

Reasons Behind the Decision

While AAP has not officially disclosed the reasons for this decision, reports suggest that it may stem from allegations of indiscipline and failure to adhere to party policies. Notably, Chadha remained silent when Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia were recently acquitted in a money laundering case linked to the liquor excise policy.

Chadha Advocates for Parental Leave

Recently, Chadha raised the issue of paid parental leave in Parliament, arguing that caregiving should be a shared responsibility. He called for it to be established as a legal right in India, emphasizing that the burden of caring for newborns often falls disproportionately on mothers, which he deemed unfair. He asserted that fathers should not have to choose between staying with their child and securing their livelihood.
