AAP Protests Erupt as MPs Defect to BJP: What’s Behind the Betrayal?
Protests Erupt Over MP Defections
In Chandigarh, members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) staged protests on Saturday outside the homes of Rajya Sabha MPs Harbhajan Singh, Ashok Mittal, and Rajinder Gupta, who recently left the party to join the BJP. Protesters marked the walls of their residences in Ludhiana and Jalandhar with the word 'Gaddar' (traitor) using spray paint.
On the previous day, AAP Rajya Sabha members Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak declared their departure from the party, along with five other MPs. The list included Ashok Mittal, Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, Swati Maliwal, and Vikramjit Sahney.
During the protests, slogans of 'Punjab de Gaddar' were chanted, accusing the defectors of betraying the people of Punjab.
In Jalandhar, AAP leader Pawan Kumar Tinu expressed confidence that the AAP government would reclaim power in Punjab by 2027, asserting that the BJP would lose its political footing. He accused the BJP of attempting to lure AAP's Rajya Sabha MPs out of desperation, claiming that an unholy alliance had formed between the Congress, BJP, and Akali Dal against AAP.
Parminder Goldy, acting president of AAP's Punjab Youth Wing, led a demonstration outside MP Rajinder Gupta's residence in Ludhiana, voicing strong opposition against him.
Goldy stated, 'The people of Punjab will not forgive this betrayal. The BJP is threatened by Arvind Kejriwal's focus on development and governance, and is trying to undermine AAP through conspiracies. However, these attempts will fail as every AAP member stands united with the party's leadership and vision.'
The AAP leaders reaffirmed their unity and commitment to serving the people of Punjab, emphasizing that those who betray the trust of the populace will ultimately face accountability.
