Aakash Chopra Highlights New Zealand's Dynamic Opening Pair Ahead of T20 World Cup Final
Chopra's Take on New Zealand's Opening Duo
Aakash Chopra, a former cricketer and commentator, has lauded the New Zealand opening batsmen, Finn Allen and Tim Seifert, as the most explosive and reliable pair in the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. He emphasized that their aggressive batting style could present a significant challenge for the Indian bowlers during the final match scheduled at the Narendra Modi Stadium this Sunday.
Praise for the New Zealand Openers
During a discussion on JioHotstar, Chopra commended the New Zealand duo for their impactful performances, particularly against teams like South Africa and the UAE, where they showcased their ability to dominate bowling attacks. He stated, "Finn Allen and Tim Seifert have proven to be the most explosive openers in this tournament and have maintained consistency. They overwhelmed South Africa and dismantled the UAE. Finn Allen possesses a unique class; if he receives width, he becomes nearly unstoppable. Bowlers who target the outside off stump will find it challenging to contain him. His straight bat technique allows him to have a broader range of shots, making him a formidable opponent."
Countering Allen's Aggressive Play
Chopra also proposed strategies for bowlers to counter Allen's aggressive batting. He advised that bowlers should refrain from delivering balls wide outside the off stump and instead focus on tighter deliveries around the stumps. He mentioned, "To curb his scoring, bowlers should aim to keep their deliveries within the stumps. Axar Patel and possibly Varun Chakaravarthy later on should concentrate on this approach. Given Allen's wristy batting style, this tactic could be effective against faster bowlers, while spin bowlers might find opportunities to deceive him."
Guidance for Varun Chakaravarthy
Chopra shared specific advice for Varun Chakaravarthy, stating, "He should maintain his speeds in the mid-90s range. By finishing deliveries within the stumps and bowling slightly fuller, he can minimize the risk of being hit. Over the past year and a half, he has been bowling slower at times. In this World Cup, particularly in his last match, he bowled nine deliveries over 100 km/h, with one reaching around 111 km/h, similar to Hardik Pandya's slower ball. This indicates he might be feeling the pressure. With only one game left, a single performance can change everything. I still believe in him, but he needs to adjust his pace; he is bowling too fast."
Path to the T20 World Cup 2026 Final
Regarding the journey of both teams to the T20 World Cup 2026 final, India and New Zealand took contrasting paths. New Zealand bounced back from group-stage defeats against South Africa and England to dominate the semifinals, successfully chasing down 170 runs against South Africa with a nine-wicket victory in just 12.5 overs, highlighted by Finn Allen's record-breaking 33-ball century—the fastest in T20 World Cup history.
On the other hand, India remained unbeaten in the group stage, with the exception of a Super 8s loss to South Africa. They secured a nail-biting seven-run victory over England in the semifinals after scoring 253/7 in their innings. Historically, New Zealand has never lost to India in T20 World Cups (2007, 2016, 2021), but India's recent 4-1 T20I series win over New Zealand in India provides the hosts with a psychological edge heading into the final.
