Aakash Chopra, the former Indian cricketer, recently commented on the audacious batting style of Rajasthan Royals' Vaibhav Suryavanshi. He pointed out that while this fearless approach can be advantageous, it also has its downsides, particularly the pressure it can place on the player as the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 approaches. Following an impressive 2025 season, where he became the youngest Indian to achieve a T20 century and set the record for the fastest IPL hundred, Suryavanshi is looking to build on his success with the Royals after his U19 World Cup victory earlier this year.

In just seven matches during IPL 2025, Suryavanshi hit 24 sixes and amassed 252 runs, boasting an average of 36 and an outstanding strike rate of 206.55.

The Dual Nature of Fearless Batting

During a segment on JioStar's 'IPL Today Live', Chopra emphasized that Suryavanshi's bold batting style is a double-edged sword. He warned that frequent early dismissals could lead to increased pressure, especially in the high-stakes environment of the IPL, where players are acutely aware of their performance expectations. Chopra remarked, "The philosophy of going for the first ball is commendable, but if you find yourself dismissed early multiple times, that’s when issues arise. The IPL is a unique challenge; it reminds me of my playing days in England, where consecutive poor performances would prompt someone to say, 'It's time to earn your keep.' This pressure is palpable in the IPL as well."

Suryavanshi's Rising Star Status

Notably, during the IPL mega auction prior to the 2025 season, Suryavanshi secured a contract worth Rs 1.1 crore with Rajasthan Royals, making him the youngest player in IPL history. At just 14 years old, he became the youngest T20 centurion and the first Indian to score the fastest fifty in IPL history against the Gujarat Titans. Chopra also highlighted Suryavanshi's previous mentorship under Rahul Dravid, noting that this season carries significant expectations, presenting a considerable challenge for the young talent. He stated, "Last year, under Dravid's guidance, he showed immense emotion after being dismissed in a match. This season, the expectations are high, and he will feel that weight. We are all anticipating that Vaibhav Suryavanshi will deliver, making this a pivotal season for him."

Chopra elaborated on the intense fame and scrutiny that IPL players face, which is markedly different from representing state or national teams. He explained that while players are trained for on-field performance, they often lack preparation for the off-field pressures that come with the IPL, including constant media attention and fan interactions. He noted, "The IPL presents a unique environment that players don’t experience at the state or national level, where they are surrounded by established stars. In franchises like Rajasthan Royals, a player like Suryavanshi may find himself at the center of advertising campaigns, which can lead to a sense of importance. Chopra concluded by stating, "The challenge lies in the fact that players are not trained to handle these distractions. They know how to play cricket and manage on-field pressure, but the off-field distractions during the IPL's eight to nine-week duration can be overwhelming and require careful management."
