On Thursday, Manoj Sinha, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, officially launched the Amarnath Yatra from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu. This event took place under strict security measures, sending the first group of pilgrims towards the base camps in Pahalgam and Baltal. The annual pilgrimage to the revered Amarnath cave temple, located at an altitude of approximately 3,880 meters, is set to commence on July 3 and will last for 57 days, concluding on August 28.
The journey will begin simultaneously via the traditional 48-kilometer Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the steeper 14-kilometer Baltal route in Ganderbal district.
Ceremonial Send-off for Pilgrims
Before the departure of the pilgrims, Lieutenant Governor Sinha conducted a special prayer ceremony at the Bhagwati Nagar base camp. He was accompanied by several dignitaries, including the Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat, opposition leader in the assembly Sunil Sharma, BJP MP Jugal Kishore Sharma, local BJP legislators, senior administrative and police officials, as well as representatives from various religious organizations.
Pilgrims Depart with Enthusiasm
Amid chants of ‘Bam Bam Bhole’, ‘Har Har Mahadev’, and ‘Jai Barfani Baba Ki’, over 5,000 pilgrims set off in a secure convoy towards both base camps. Following the ceremony, Sinha shared on social media platform X, "Har Har Mahadev! The journey to seek blessings from Baba Barfani has begun. The first group of pilgrims for the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026 has been dispatched from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu. The Amarnath Yatra symbolizes profound spiritual awakening." He expressed hopes for a safe and spiritually fulfilling journey for all devotees.
Positive Feedback from Pilgrims
Pilgrims expressed satisfaction with the arrangements made by the administration and security agencies. Suresh Kumar from Surat, a first-time traveler, praised the facilities and support provided by the administration and military. Baba Goga Nath from Junagadh described the pilgrimage as a blessing from God and commended the arrangements made for saints and devotees. Saint Sukham Das, who has been undertaking the Amarnath pilgrimage for 32 years, noted significant improvements in facilities for elderly and disabled pilgrims. Vaibhav from Uttarakhand expressed happiness at being part of the first group and voiced complete trust in the security measures. Rajni Devi from Jaipur also appreciated the arrangements made by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board and the administration.
Security Measures in Place
Officials reported that the convoy of pilgrims was dispatched under heavy security. Special measures, including traffic restrictions on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, have been implemented to ensure their safe passage. An official related to traffic management stated that restrictions will be in effect from July 2 to August 28, with daily traffic advisories and designated vehicle movement times.
This year, over 390,000 pilgrims have registered for the Amarnath Yatra, with immediate registration facilities now available in Jammu. The entire Jammu region is under extensive security coverage, supported by multi-layered security forces and technology-based surveillance. BJP MP Jugal Kishore Sharma emphasized the significance of the Amarnath Yatra as one of the country's most important pilgrimages, expressing confidence that it will be conducted peacefully and smoothly. Opposition leader Sunil Sharma also welcomed the pilgrims, stating that the comprehensive arrangements made by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board will ensure a safe and convenient journey.
