A Final Goodbye at Green Park Crematorium

On Wednesday morning, the Green Park crematorium in South Delhi witnessed an emotional farewell as 32-year-old Harish Rana was laid to rest. Originally hailing from the Pachhad area in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, his passing marked the conclusion of a 13-year journey filled with both suffering and dignity.

Harish passed away on March 24, 2026, at 4:10 PM at AIIMS, New Delhi, following a historic decision by the Supreme Court of India on March 11 that granted him passive euthanasia. His case is recognized as a pioneering instance in India, establishing a precedent for end-of-life care that is anchored in legal, ethical, and medical frameworks.

Once a promising B.Tech student at Panjab University in Chandigarh, Harish's life took a tragic turn in 2013 during Raksha Bandhan when he fell from the fourth floor of his accommodation while conversing with his sister. This accident resulted in severe brain damage and quadriplegia, leaving him in a permanent vegetative state. For over a decade, he relied entirely on life support systems, including a tracheostomy for breathing and a gastrojejunostomy tube for nutrition, with no significant recovery.

After exhausting all treatment options—his father Ashok even selling their home to fund his care—the family sought the Supreme Court's intervention for a dignified end to his suffering. Following the court's approval, Harish was admitted to the palliative care unit at AIIMS’ Dr BR Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital on March 14.

A multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Seema Mishra, including specialists in neurosurgery, palliative medicine, onco-anesthesia, and psychiatry, managed the sensitive process. In accordance with the court's directives, life-sustaining treatments, including artificial nutrition, were gradually withdrawn under strict supervision, ensuring he experienced no pain or distress until his last moments.

In a profoundly humane gesture, Harish's family opted to donate his lungs, both kidneys, and corneas, providing a new chance at life for six recipients. Even in their grief, they chose to create hope.

Before the final rites, his father, with hands clasped in prayer, made a poignant plea: “Please don’t cry… let my son go in peace.” This heartfelt statement resonated deeply with all those present.

Harish Rana's journey, from the tranquil hills of Himachal to a hospital bed in Delhi, embodies the resilience of a family, the burden of tough decisions, and the profound impact of compassion. In his passing, he not only found peace but also gave life.
