36 Bangladesh Nationals Detained in Dhubri for Illegal Entry
Detention of Bangladesh Nationals in Dhubri
Dhubri, Oct 30: A total of 36 individuals from Bangladesh were apprehended at Jogamaya Ghat in Dhubri early on Friday, suspected of illegally entering India and using the area as a transit point to reach Chennai.
Senior Superintendent of Police Debashish Bora indicated that authorities had been monitoring intelligence reports for several days regarding a group of Bangladeshi nationals attempting to enter the district.
In response, surveillance was heightened at river ghats, particularly along the Brahmaputra, which was identified as a probable entry route.
Acting on specific intelligence received around 2:30 AM, police intercepted the group at Jogamaya Ghat in Dhubri town.
“We confirmed our sources' information early in the morning. Approximately 120 individuals were on the boat, and after screening, we identified 36 from Chapai Nawabganj, Bangladesh. They utilized this route as a transit point. We seized some documents and mobile phones. The investigation is still in its early stages,” Bora stated.
He added that police had been vigilant at the river ghats following intelligence about a significant group’s movement.
“For the past two days, we had received alerts that many individuals from Bangladesh had entered India and were likely heading to Dhubri via the river route. Upon receiving this information, we heightened our alert at the ghats,” the SSP explained.
Initial questioning suggested that the group had traveled by boat along the Brahmaputra from Hatsingimari towards Dhubri, intending to use the district as a transit point before proceeding to Chennai.
Reports indicate that the detained individuals claimed to have paid between Rs 15,000 and Rs 17,000 each to middlemen for assistance with their journey. They also mentioned a person named Milan, who allegedly helped them cross into India.
According to police, the group consisted of men aged between 30 and 50, with no women present. The SSP noted that it would take time to interrogate all 36 individuals to determine how they entered the country and who facilitated their movement.
During the questioning, the apprehended individuals reportedly mentioned that a total of 38 Bangladesh nationals had entered Assam, although police managed to intercept 36 during the operation. This discrepancy will be investigated further as part of the ongoing inquiry.
This operation has highlighted the ongoing issue of Dhubri’s river routes being used as transit corridors for unauthorized cross-border movements.
