Char Dham Yatra 2026 Begins

The Char Dham Yatra for 2026 has officially commenced, with activities ramping up across Uttarakhand. The mountains are once again bustling with activity as pilgrims arrive and routes gradually reopen. This year, there is a strong sense of movement alongside significant structural organization. The doors to Yamunotri and Gangotri opened on April 19, marking the start of the pilgrimage. Kedarnath's doors opened on April 22, while Badrinath's will open on April 23. With millions of devotees expected, authorities have implemented strict regulations this year, focusing on safety, crowd management, and maintaining a spiritual atmosphere.

Accessing the Sacred Sites

Among the four sacred sites, Kedarnath is considered the most challenging to reach, as it cannot be accessed directly by road. Pilgrims must trek approximately 16-18 kilometers from Gaurikund. For those unable to walk, helicopter bookings can only be made through the official IRCTC portal. In contrast, Badrinath and Gangotri are conveniently connected by road, making them accessible for the elderly. To reach Yamunotri, a 5-6 kilometer trek from Janki Chatti is necessary. Typically, completing this entire journey starting from Rishikesh or Haridwar takes about 10 to 12 days.

New Rules and Discipline in Temple Premises

To preserve the sanctity and tranquility of the temples this year, the administration has taken several stringent measures. The use of mobile phones and cameras is completely prohibited within the temple premises of Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Gangotri. A cloakroom facility has been provided for devotees outside the temples. Touching idols, scriptures, or bells inside the temples is not allowed. Maintaining discipline and dignity during the darshan is mandatory to ensure a smooth experience for all.

Mandatory Registration and Health Protocols

No one will be permitted to travel without prior registration. Pilgrims can register through the official Uttarakhand tourism portal or app. Aadhaar cards are being used for identity verification and tracking. The QR code or e-pass received after successful registration will be checked at various checkpoints. Due to the high altitude, 177 ambulances and air ambulances from AIIMS Rishikesh have been deployed along the route. Travelers over 55 years old or those with chronic illnesses (such as asthma or diabetes) are advised to take special precautions and carry a fitness certificate.

Travel and Vehicle Operation Regulations

To ensure safety on hilly roads, vehicle movement is regulated: travel on mountain roads is restricted from 10 PM to 4 AM. All vehicles must undergo technical inspections, and large vehicles are prohibited from entering narrow paths. Traffic diversions may also be implemented on busy routes to alleviate congestion.

Spiritual Significance of the Char Dhams

This pilgrimage represents the convergence of four highly sacred sites in the Garhwal Himalayas: Yamunotri, the abode of Goddess Yamuna and the river's source; Gangotri, the holy site dedicated to Goddess Ganga; Kedarnath, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva; and Badrinath, the sacred abode of Lord Vishnu. This journey symbolizes not only religious faith but also offers a unique experience of self-discovery in the lap of the Himalayas. The government's new arrangements aim to make this experience safe and seamless.
