Arrest of Suspected Terrorist in Davanagere
Authorities reported on Wednesday that a 20-year-old man has been apprehended in Davanagere district, Karnataka, on suspicions of being connected to a terrorist organization based in Pakistan. The suspect, identified as Suhail, hails from Uttar Pradesh and had recently moved to the area of Harihar, where he worked as a painter. According to police, he was arrested on Tuesday during a joint operation conducted with intelligence agencies, based on information received from the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Suspicious Material Found on WhatsApp
Police revealed that they discovered suspicious materials related to terrorism on the suspect's WhatsApp account, and he was allegedly in contact with several individuals located in Pakistan. Shekhar H. Tekkenavar, the Superintendent of Police in Davanagere, explained that the suspect was taken into custody based on credible information. He informed reporters that a police sub-inspector detained the individual for questioning after receiving reliable intelligence. Approximately 15 days prior, the suspect had started working as a painter in a private factory near the Harihar Rural Police Station and was residing in a nearby village. The SP noted that inquiries were initiated after receiving information about his suspicious activities. During the investigation, it was revealed that he was in contact with individuals of Pakistani origin through WhatsApp groups and social media.
Suspect Connected via Social Media
Citing initial investigations, police officials indicated that the suspect had been in contact with others through social media regarding alleged extremist activities. They mentioned that there are indications this case might be similar to a previous incident recorded in Tumakuru district, but further investigations will confirm this. Currently, they are verifying the identity of the detained suspect. In the coming days, they plan to complete the identification process, gather all necessary evidence, and take appropriate action. According to officials, the suspect reportedly arrived in the area with a group of about ten individuals. Tekkenavar added that they are also investigating the backgrounds of others involved. After the investigation, they will determine the veracity of the claims, whether any specific groups are involved, the nature of the contacts, and other relevant details, which will only become clear once the investigation is concluded.
