Known for her elaborate and celebrated work in Marathi Cinema and theatre, Sumitra Bhave, passed away in a hospital in Pune on Monday following lung-related ailments.
Filmmaker and actor Satish Kaushik along with Madhur Bhandarkar took to their respective social media profile and shared pictures with Sumitra and expressed their grief.

Satish Kaushik wrote, “Sumitra Ji Marathi Cinema & Theatre will miss u always for ur immense contribution…Had a privilege & honor to work with u on a Marathi film and I will always remember creative, learning experience with u at ur Pune home with a lovely tea. RIP”

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar wrote, “Saddened by the demise of writer-director #SumitraBhave ji who made very unique, empowering & social awareness films. Her contribution in Marathi Cinema will be missed. #OmShanti”

Sumitra Bhave had won several national and international awards for her work. In 1985, she made her first short film Bai, which was about a woman living in a slum and her survival against all odds. The film won several national awards. In 1995, Sumitra Bhave and Sukthankar made their directorial debut with Doghi, which received the National Film Award.

Her other notable works include Devrai (2004), GhoMala Asala Hawa,Ha Bharat Maza, Astu – So Be It, Samhita, Welcome Home, Vaastupurush, Dahavi Fa and Kaasav, a National Award-winning film.
