Understanding the Significance of Nirjala Ekadashi: A Sacred Day for Devotees
The Importance of Nirjala Ekadashi
According to the Hindu calendar, there are 24 Ekadashis celebrated each year, with Nirjala Ekadashi being one of the most revered days dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This day holds immense spiritual significance for devotees.
On Nirjala Ekadashi, followers undertake a *Nirjala* fast, which means abstaining from water, to earn the blessings of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that this particular Ekadashi offers the highest spiritual rewards, making the observance of the fast and worship essential for attaining *Moksha* (salvation).
Nirjala Ekadashi: The Most Auspicious Ekadashi
**Nirjala Ekadashi: The Greatest Ekadashi**
The significance of this day is elaborated in the *Brihannaradiya Purana*. Astrologer Pandit Saurabh Tripathi from Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, explains that in the *Uttara Khanda* of the *Brihannaradiya Purana*, Maharshi Ved Vyasa discusses the importance of this fast with Bhima, highlighting it as the most significant of all Ekadashis.
Observing the Nirjala Ekadashi fast alone can provide the spiritual benefits of all Ekadashis, even if one does not fast on other days. However, it is essential to perform the *Abhishek* (ritual bathing) of Lord Vishnu as part of the observance.
Performing the *Abhishek* of Shri Hari Vishnu
**How to Perform the *Abhishek* of Shri Hari Vishnu?**
On Nirjala Ekadashi, devotees should rise early and bathe during the *Brahma Muhurta*, the auspicious pre-dawn period. After bathing, they should don new yellow garments.
Clean the worship area and place an idol or image of Lord Shri Hari Vishnu on a raised platform (*chowki*). Prepare *Tulsi* leaves, a *Kalash* (sacred pot), and a lit lamp for the worship, invoking both Lord Ganesha and Lord Vishnu.
Begin the *Abhishek* of Lord Vishnu with *Gangajal* (holy water from the Ganges), followed by milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar. Conclude the ritual by bathing the deity with pure water, drying Him with a clean cloth, and dressing Him in new clothes.
Offering to Lord Vishnu
After the *Abhishek*, offer *Panchamrit*, mangoes, bananas, and a mixture of curd and *Mishri* (rock sugar) to Lord Vishnu. Additionally, incorporate the liquid used during the *Abhishek* into the *Panchamrit*. While performing the *Abhishek*, chant the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" silently.
Performing the *Abhishek* of Laddu Gopal
**You may also perform the *Abhishek* of Laddu Gopal**
If you do not have an idol of Lord Vishnu at home but possess an idol of Laddu Gopal, you can perform the *Abhishek* for Laddu Gopal on Nirjala Ekadashi. Laddu Gopal symbolizes the child form of Lord Krishna and is a manifestation of Lord Vishnu; thus, performing the *Abhishek* for Laddu Gopal offers the same spiritual benefits as doing so for an idol of Lord Vishnu.
