The Importance of Hartalika Teej in Hinduism

In Hindu culture, each lunar day (*tithi*) and day of the week (*vaar*) carries unique importance. Women engage in various fasts (*vrat*) to promote enduring marital happiness, their husbands' health, and a joyful married life. Celebrations such as Hariyali Teej, Kajari Teej, and Karwa Chauth are integral to this practice. Among these, the Hartalika Teej fast stands out as particularly demanding, observed with profound devotion and strict adherence to its guidelines.

Participating in the Hartalika Teej fast is believed to enhance happiness in married life. Women who are observing this fast for the first time should ensure they understand the rules associated with this challenging observance, as not adhering to them can render the fast ineffective. Let's explore the essential guidelines for this fast as shared by Pandit Anand Bhardwaj from Ujjain.

This year, according to the Vedic calendar, the *Tritiya Tithi* (third day) of the *Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha* (waxing moon phase) commences on September 13 at 7:08 AM and concludes on September 14 at 7:06 AM. Based on the *Udaya Tithi* (sunrise tithi), the Hartalika Teej fast will be observed on Monday, September 14.

Mythological Background of Hartalika Teej

**Mythological Significance of Hartalika Teej**
Women primarily undertake the Hartalika Teej fast to pray for their husbands' longevity and a harmonious married life. This fast is linked to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. According to legend, Goddess Parvati's father intended for her to marry Lord Vishnu, but she wished to be with Lord Shiva. To fulfill her desire, her friends took her to a dense forest, where she engaged in intense penance to win Lord Shiva's favor. Eventually, they were united in marriage.

Guidelines for First-Time Observers of the Fast

**Observing the Fast for the First Time? Know the Rules**
1. The Hartalika Teej fast is regarded as one of the most challenging fasts. Participants do not consume any water on the fasting day. As it is a *Nirjala* fast (without water), it may not be suitable for everyone; thus, if you are attempting this fast for the first time, it is advisable to mentally prepare yourself a few days in advance.

2. On this day, married women should adorn themselves with the 'Solah Shringar' (sixteen traditional adornments) and worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Applying henna (mehndi) is considered crucial, as it is believed to please Lord Shankar and fulfill all wishes.

3. The fast begins before sunrise. Women should bathe, wear clean attire, and perform worship rituals for Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha.

4. During the worship, women perform ritualistic adoration of the idols of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha, offering flowers, incense, lamps, sandalwood paste, unbroken rice grains (akshat), fruits, and sweets to the deities.
