What is Sharad Purnima?

Sharad Purnima Date in 2026 occurs on the full moon day of the bright fortnight in Ashvin month. This year, the Purnima Tithi starts at 11:55 AM on October 25 and lasts until 9:41 AM on October 26. According to the *Udayatithi*, which is the lunar day at sunrise, Ashvin Purnima is observed on October 26. This leads to a common question: should Sharad Purnima be celebrated on the 25th or the 26th? Since the full moon Tithi is not present during the night of the 26th, we need to clarify the correct date, *muhurta*, and the appropriate time to prepare the traditional *kheer* (rice pudding) for the festival.

When to Celebrate Sharad Purnima?

Determining the Celebration Date
According to traditional fasting guidelines, the observance of Sharad Purnima is based on the presence of the full moon Tithi during the *Pradosh* (twilight) and *Nishita* (midnight) *muhurtas*. If the full moon Tithi is present during the *Nishita muhurta* on one day but absent during the *Pradosh muhurta* the next day, then the first day is chosen for the celebration. For October 26, the *Nishita muhurta* occurs during the *Pratipada* Tithi of the dark fortnight, as the full moon Tithi concludes at 9:41 AM that morning. Additionally, the *Pradosh muhurta* for the full moon does not take place that day.

On October 25, however, the full moon Tithi is present during both the *Pradosh Kaal* and the *Nishita muhurta*. The *Nishita muhurta* on this day lasts from 11:40 PM to 12:31 AM. Therefore, it is advisable to celebrate Sharad Purnima on October 25.

Preparing and Offering 'Kheer'

Ritual for 'Kheer'
As per tradition, when the full moon is visible, prepare 'Kheer' using cow's milk, ghee, and sugar. After worshipping the Moon, offer 'Arghya' (a water ritual) using a mixture of raw milk, white flowers, sandalwood, and unbroken rice grains. Place the 'Kheer' in an open area where it can be illuminated by moonlight, ensuring nothing contaminates it.

Consumption of 'Kheer'

When to Eat 'Kheer'
The 'Kheer' should remain under the moonlight throughout the night and is to be consumed the next morning. This means you should place the 'Kheer' out on the night of October 25 and enjoy it on the morning of October 26. Eating this 'Kheer' is believed to have health benefits.
